Product Intelligence System
Turning Product Complexity Into Consumer Confidence
Source Naturals' breadth is one of its greatest strengths. With more than 600 product families across 30+ categories, there are solutions for an extraordinary range of consumer needs. But that breadth creates another challenge: where does someone start, and what happens when they're looking for more than one solution?
A simple product finder can help someone identify a product. I wanted to solve the harder problem: how do we use what we know to help someone better understand the choices they're making across their entire stack?
I conceived a product intelligence system designed to connect decades of ingredient and product knowledge with consumer need states, nutritional reference data and the products themselves. The goal was to turn institutional knowledge into consumer education, and consumer education into greater confidence in the decisions people make.
Making a large portfolio easier to navigate was only part of the opportunity. The larger opportunity was making the knowledge behind that portfolio more useful to the people the brand exists to serve.
From Products to a System
A large supplement portfolio isn't necessarily a collection of interchangeable products. Small differences in ingredients, dosages and formulation can make similar products appropriate for different purposes.
The opportunity was to create an intelligence layer beneath the portfolio that could understand those differences.
I designed the concept, strategy, data architecture, recommendation logic and consumer experience for a system that connects ingredient information, product composition, established claims, benefit categories and nutritional reference data.
Instead of simply asking “Which product matches this goal?”, the system is being designed to answer a more useful question:
“How do these products work together for what I'm trying to accomplish?”
Understanding the Whole Stack
The concept becomes especially valuable as a consumer's goals become more complex.
Someone might be looking for support across sleep, immune health, cognition and energy. Individually, several products may make sense. But evaluating them independently doesn't account for what happens when their ingredients are combined.
The Stack Checker is designed to analyze selected products collectively against the consumer's chosen need states and combined ingredient profile.
It can help surface where need states are represented, identify areas of ingredient overlap or cumulative intake that warrant attention, and present alternative products when another combination may better align with the consumer's goals and established nutritional reference values.
The objective isn't to give the consumer more products.
It's to help them make more informed choices about the products they're already considering.
Designing the Experience Around the Consumer
The intelligence behind the system is designed to work across multiple points in the consumer journey.
A consumer could build a stack from a dedicated tool, evaluate products already saved to their account, or review the combination of products currently sitting in their cart.
From there, they could keep their original selections or explore suggested alternatives while preserving the need states they originally wanted to address.
Once established, a stack could also become something persistent rather than something the consumer has to reconstruct with every purchase. It could be saved to an account, purchased as a bundle, reordered later or potentially connected to a subscription.
The underlying intelligence stays out of the way. The consumer sees a simpler decision.
Trust Before Transaction
The business opportunity goes beyond a larger cart.
Source Naturals has spent more than four decades developing knowledge around ingredients, formulations and nutritional approaches. I believe that knowledge has greater value when we can put it directly into the hands of consumers.
Education creates understanding. Understanding creates confidence. And when a brand consistently helps people make more informed decisions, confidence can become trust, and trust can become long-term brand loyalty.
That's why the system was conceived around education first. Better product discovery, bundles, repeat purchases and subscriptions can all become natural extensions of the experience, but they're consequences of creating something genuinely useful rather than the reason for creating it.
More importantly, the system gives us another way to serve the mission of Source Naturals: to give people the confidence, hope and freedom to explore their full potential through vibrant health.
Instead of simply telling consumers what we sell, we're using what we know to help them better understand what's possible.
From Concept to Development
I developed the original concept, strategy, matrix architecture, recommendation logic and UX flow, then presented the system to company leadership.
Following leadership alignment, the project moved into development with Marketing IT supporting data mapping and R&D leadership supporting ingredient and claims information.
The underlying system architecture and ingredient mapping have been completed, with claims data integration currently underway. The planned next phases include prototype development, beta testing, a targeted soft launch with trusted consumers and, following validation, broader rollout.
Current Status
In development: data architecture and ingredient mapping complete; claims integration underway ahead of prototype development.
